General Information on Business in Japan

Are there any requirements for opening a bank account in Japan, such as company address or director status?

Each bank has criteria for opening a bank account in Japan. Since these are internal rules of the banks, they are not disclosed to the public. There are also many types of banks. Megabanks, regional banks, and Internet banks, in that order, have less strict criteria. The actual situation cannot be determined without visiting each bank individually.

However, all banks will examine what kind of business you will conduct in Japan, how much you will deal with, whether you have secured business partners, and whether you have a proven track record overseas. Therefore, opening an account at any bank is difficult if you have only established a base of operations without a concrete plan. It may be necessary for the representative of the Japanese corporation to be prepared to explain a concrete business plan to the bank.
